New Piano Lab for XC High School and Middle School Students

Students at Xenia Christian are enjoying the new piano lab in the Barnett Building, which was installed this year for the high school and middle school group piano classes. The lab is equipped with eight Kawai digital pianos with earphones, all purchased from Hauer Music through the Xenia Community Schools auxiliary funds.

Principal Mr. Batchelor developed the classes in order to support students who take lessons and to help them become better musicians. He explains, "Piano is a good basis for other instruments such as band and strings, as well as for those who take voice lessons. Research shows that students who take music lessons have higher achievement in all academic areas."

Classes are offered to piano students from beginning through intermediate levels. Mrs. Linda Sommers teaches the high school classes, while Mr. Batchelor leads the middle school ones. The Alfred All-in-One piano course is used, as well as other curricula, such as scale books and various pieces, based upon the student's proficiency and interest. Students practice independently using the pianos and earphones that are wired so that the teacher can listen in on demand. Twice a year students will participate in a recital.

We are extremely thankful for the provision of the funds for this new lab. Our school is convinced of the importance of having a strong fine arts program in its curriculum and will continue to seek other innovative ways to add to our current program.
